A Final Update

IMG_5657 IMG_9917As our community approaches the size of our hometown of Sacramento, I have a final update to share: Mikaela has been transitioned to hospice care & I’ve decided to table the campaign to remove any distractions during this time. These are difficult words to type, but it’s the clear choice at this point.

While we were not successful with getting the drug, your support has been essential in providing a boost of hope to get us through the past couple months — THANK YOU! If you’re able, here are 3 ways you can help us in the coming days:

1) THOUGHTS: As we enjoy our final days together, your thoughts/prayers/vibes for a smooth and pain-free transition are much appreciated. The hospice team has been doing a great job of keeping Mikaela comfortable, and we’re doing everything we can to keep it that way. It’s an unavoidably precarious situation, so your thoughts are much appreciated!
2) MONEY: Having never been through a situation like this before, I’m nervous about the costs of everything in the coming weeks. If you’re able, we’d greatly appreciate any financial assistance you’re able to provide. You were all extremely generous during our campaign to cover the cost of genetic testing, and we’ll be receiving those results shortly. In lieu of setting up a whole new fundraising page, we’re just going to keep the page for that campaign open for the time being. Thanks to those who are able, and we completely understand if you’re not!
3) SUPPORTING OTHERS: Please do not allow the outcome of our campaign stop you from supporting others. Even though we were unsuccessful, the fight brought great joy to Mikaela during these rough times and anyone in her position will benefit from a similar experience. You’ll be able to find other compassionate use petitions & I want to highlight the petition for 10 year-old Joey Xu as he faces the same subtype of kidney cancer.

Nothing I can say will make up for the half-million who’ve lent their support, but I hope I’ll be able to repay the favor someday to as many of you as possible. Just let me know! If her story has provided you even a fraction of the inspiration it’s given me, then I’m proud to know that she made the world a better place.

Holding Mikaela’s hand & prepared for the coming days,

Keith Knapp

ps: I hope you enjoy these final pictures of Mikaela’s unfailing positivity. These were taken just a few days ago, with Mikaela making funny faces while wearing her friend’s glasses.

This is heartbreaking. I signed your petition and I had the highest of hopes. Thank you for sharing this journey with us. Mikaela, you are beautiful, an inspiration and although I have never met you, I felt your spirit and am glad that my path crossed with yours in this small way. ❤

  12. Michelle says:

My wish is for a gentle journey for you Mikaela and know that our love for you goes with you. Keith and the rest of your family will remain in our thought during this difficult time. You have been such an inspiration to so many of us. I had hoped for more time for you and Keith but you will always be a part of his life and will see each other again one day.

  13. JMorningstar, BSc, RRT, ACCS, NPS says:

    Keith, Mikaela’s father and mother:

The honor and pleasure of taking care of Mikaela was all mine. I both sympathize and empathize with you and yours. I lost my sister in January from Lung Cancer. She follows my mother who died of metastatic CA of the brain.

  14. Justin says:

Such sadness! I am crying for both of you two. Every marriage must face something like this at some point, but I wish yours’ didn’t have to face it so soon.

Both of you two are inspirational: Keith in your overflowing love for Mikaela, and in your actions because of that love. And Mikaela, your continuing positivity, bravery, and humor through this is a profound life lesson for me, and it is one that I will incorporate into my life and into what I teach to my young children.

I am glad to hear that the Hospice team has been able to keep Mikaela comfortable, and I hope that you guys are surrounded with the help and love you deserve during this time. Peace be with you.

    Dear Keith & Mikaela,
No time on earth is long enough to share with those we love or to prepare our hearts for good-bye. Our warmest thoughts are with you both now and always.

  21. Christina says:

I just came across your petition while browsing through the other petition on the change it website. Idk why exactly I choose to stop and look as yours. Maybe God wants me to pray for you too. Idk. But my heart weeps for the two of you. I pray the Lord wrap his arms around the both of you. There are some things we can never ever understand. That our minds just weren’t built to comprehend. But just know out of all this, something will come of it. God will do something amazing with this situation. And God is waiting for you with loving arms.

  22. juju333 says:

One can never truly like a post like this, however, it is good to read about your latest news. Hospice is a wonderful organization, although, each is run slightly differently, I am sure they will take good care of you both.
My prayers to you at this time and for letting us know about how we can continue to assist others.
May the angels come and dance and play with you.

Thinking of you and praying for peace for both of you. What an incredible story of love and bravery.

  24. Keith and Mikaela, We are holding you in our hearts and our prayers. May this be a gentle time for you both. As the mother of a beautiful young woman who died during her senior year in high school I know for certain that while this time is more difficult than one can imagine, it is not an ending, but rather a transition in a love that never ends, only changes. May angels surround you, may peace enfold you, may you know that many people are standing beside you in spirit.

  31. Marcus Scott says:

Mikaela and Keith, I’m thinking of you both and hope you can just be together through this transition. The right words to describe it escape me, but I’ve been through it – I lost my wife to ovarian cancer in July 2011. So for you Keith, I just suggest you be with Mikaela as much as you both can manage. You still need to sleep, but the memories of the coming days WILL be of comfort in the months to come. Cherish her now as you always have.

  32. Sonya Fletcher says:

Sending Peace, Love and Blessings to you both for today and always! My father is currently undergoing treatment for stage 4 Kidney Cancer, and we pray everyday for a cure. Your fight was not in vain, the public was made aware of this important issue & Mikaela was given hope. She did not receive the treatment she needed in time, but because of your campaign, hopefully others will! Let’s hope the FDA and drug companies will get their act together and start putting lives ahead of $… Stay strong & remember that you have a huge amount of people ready to give love and support. Best Wishes Keith, and Godspeed Mikaela… xoxo
